Project One, Indoor Installation Ideas
For project one, I'm leaning towards the University of Tampa Library for the location. While certain technical considerations and project parameters must be adhered to, I feel it essential to focus on a central idea or theme.
Society values ideas and information... The very things that are recorded and preserved in books. Access to this content has historically been very highly valued. Technology is making this content accessible around the world with the world wide web, ebooks, computers, and smart phones. With all of the accessible content, libraries are less frequently used. While information is easy to share electronically, it's also easy to change and delete. I want to create an art installation that encourages the audience to consider the value of information and societal practices for preserving and destroying information.
VALUE
What are ideas and information worth?
DEMOCRATIZATION
Who gets to decide which information is good and which is bad?
ACCESS
Who gets to have access to information?
PRESERVATION
Which information and ideas should be preserved?
Should some ideas and information be destroyed?
Who should decide?
For the composition, I'm leaning towards the idea of several books on a table with blank pages that can be projected onto. A small projector and projection mapping software would allow me to project content such as text and motion graphics. I'm thinking something along the lines of content from books that were banned by the Nazi party in 1939, resulting in a mass book burning. I think making the books appear to be on fire would be a powerful image. From the ashes, I'm thinking that the text would turn into some sort of a binary code, and the books would morph into e-readers... The idea is to show a visual change from one form to another. The burning part is really more of an attention gainer and to encourage us to consider the value of information and ideas...
The following render shows an outdoor daytime location, however I will be setting up in the UT Library.
